Sweat Machine Purifies Sweat for Drinking
Jul-23-13
Developed at the request of Unicef1 to raise awareness on the shortage of drinking water, the Sweat Machine purifies sweat in to drinkable water. A critical component of the Sweat Machine is the Membrane2 Distillation3 technology developed by HVR and the Royal Institute of Technology , which uses a thermal4 separation process to distill water and is making its debut5 in the device. The system heats the water to vapor6 within a plastic cassette7 and then circulates it between two membranes to that allow the steam to pass through while filtering out the bacterial, salt and other materials. According to engineer Andreas Hammar, the device is similar to the machine used on the Space Station to filter urine, but cheaper to build. One typically sweaty shirt can deliver about a mouthful of water. |
